How NHL grades work

An NHL skater grade measures the goals a player adds over a replacement-level player. It counts what shows up on the score sheet (goals, assists, shots, blocks, takeaways, penalties drawn) and what doesn't: the quality of his own shots, and the scoring chances his team creates and allows while he's on the ice, from our expected-goals model. Each piece is weighted by how much it actually decides games, fitted on four seasons of results.

  • Season grades rank the goals a player adds per team game, against this season's forwards or defensemen with a third of their team's games played. Playing time counts: a strong third-liner adds less than a strong first-liner. Early in the season each player starts from last season's rate, which gives way as his minutes build up.
  • Game grades rank that game against every game last season (forwards with 10+ minutes, defensemen 12+), so a 90 means the same on any night.
  • Goalies are graded on goals saved above an average goalie: saves beyond what league-average save percentage would make on the same shots.

How we know it works: on seasons it was never fitted to, our skater value predicted game results better than Game Score, the formula most hockey analysts use (0.290 vs 0.279 correlation with goal margin, a gap larger than chance). We're testing it again, live, this season, and will publish the result at the All-Star break. Goalies: a shot-quality version (goals saved above expected) lost to plain save percentage in our tests, so we use save percentage.
