How NBA grades work

An NBA grade measures how many points a player adds per 100 possessions compared with a league-average player. Each box-score stat is valued in points: shooting is judged against what an average shooter would score on the same shots against the same defense, and assists, turnovers, rebounds, steals, blocks and fouls each count for or against him. The values were fit to RAPM, a lineup-based impact measure, on the 2020-21 to 2022-23 seasons.

  • Season grades count how much a player plays as well as how well: they rank the points he adds per game over a replacement-level player, against this season's players with 10+ games. A great bench player in 12 minutes a night adds less than a very good starter in 34, and grades him that way. His points per 100 possessions, the rate underneath, is shown beside it. Early in the season each player starts from last season's rate, which gives way as his minutes build up.
  • Game grades count minutes: they measure points added over a replacement-level player in that game, ranked against every game of 12+ minutes last season, so a 90 means the same on any night.
  • Defense is the weak spot. The box score sees steals, blocks and rebounds, not the defender who keeps his man in front of him.

We tested the grade on three seasons it never saw, before launch. It predicted a player's value the following season far better than Game Score, but it did no better than Game Score at predicting game results, which was the test we set it to pass.
